1963

i was peeking down the hall
    from under my raincoat
all of us huddled on the floor
    against the walls
    when mrs. torsey caught me
from behind with a good pop to the skull
“keep that head down under your coat!
do you want to go blind? are you lame?
now duck and cover young man!”

    they’d bombard us with misinformation
    which sent our imaginations wild
we’d nearly wet ourselves in fear
    but somehow
    we knew we’d be safe
    in our huddle
    like hiding under mama’s skirt
our yellow slickers could hold off
    russians and exploding mushrooms

Dan Sicoli
Between working at various vocations in Niagara Falls, New York including baker, sales manager, cheese packer, and printer, I've placed poems with numerous litmags, ezines, anthologies, and broadsheets. I co-founded Slipstream Magazine and Press in 1980 and have been a co-editor ever since.
Lately, I have discovered that more and more of my hair appears to collect around the shower drain. Not a good omen.
